In San Francisco, the Office of the Mayor has announced a jobs initiative, beginning in the summer and continuing in the fall. The mayor and the United Way have challenged the public and private sectors to hire some 7,000 persons who are under-served and ages 14 through 24. The Summer Jobs+ program is in its third year.
Last year, the project placed over 6,800 young people in jobs and paid internships, up from 5,200 in 2012. Both years' totals exceeded goals. Fifty private businesses and 60 non-profits were among the employers. Additionally, about 55 city agencies provided assistance. Many youth found work in the fields of banking, retail, and computer science.
The nation's unemployment rate for 16- to 24-year olds is 12.8 percent. That amount jumps to 17.7 percent for ages 16 to 19. Both figures are well above the jobless total for the general population.
